AGTS History
In 1962, the Junior League of Philadelphia initiated a program called Art Goes to School, which is an art appreciation program designed to introduce children to different works of art. Initially staffed by Junior League volunteers, PTA school mothers joined the program in 1964 and then seven years later AGTS became an independant, self-governing, non-profit organization within the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Although the AGTS program is geared to reach the elementary grades, many chapters visit nursery, middle, and high schools, special schools, classes for the handicapped, home-schooled children and senior citizens' groups.
OUR PROGRAM
The primary purpose of the AGTS program is to stimulate an interest in and enjoyment of art by elementary-aged children. The artists and their works, styles and historical periods are discovered through the use of high-quality reproductions and interactive discussions in a small classroom setting. Each session lasts about 45 minutes. Volunteers in the North Penn chapter visit the elementary schools of the North Penn School District as well as many of the nearby private and parochial schools. Every year we have a new collection of works to share with the children.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:
The dedicated members of the North Penn chapter are part of the local communities served by the North Penn School District. Our volunteers span in age from 18 to 80. Their educational levels range from high school diplomas to Ph.D.s. Some work full time while others are retired or stay-at-home parents.
To become a volunteer with AGTS, a background in art or education is not necessary. The only prerequisites to join us are a genuine interest in art and a sincere desire to work with children.
If you are interested in volunteering in the North Penn area, please email your name, phone number and best time to call. Put "AGTS" as the subject. Email: sinzy1@comcast.com
